THANKS TO PROJECT UPSCALE, WE ARE LAUNCHING A COURSE CALLED INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE AT THE END OF OCTOBER.
PLACE: BRDÁRKA
DATE: 21.10.2024 – 23.10.2024

ABOUT THE COURSE
The course serves as an entry point into the world of permaculture and is suitable for complete beginners, as well as for those who have already encountered permaculture solutions and wish to enhance their knowledge, meet new people, and share their visions.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with members of the local community who have been implementing permaculture solutions for nearly twenty years.
We will embark on a fairly intensive three-day journey, during which the instructors will introduce us to the following topics:
- Permaculture ethics and attitudes
- Permaculture principles applicable in daily life
- Permaculture design
- Landscape planning and cultivation practices in line with sustainable living principles and harmonious cooperation between humans and the land
The course will be flexibly tailored to the needs of the participants and instructors, as well as the weather conditions. It will include theoretical lessons, interactive sessions, group work, discussions, and video presentations.
The aim of the course is not to break down all permaculture topics into technological details, but to familiarize the participant with the whole breadth of permaculture so that he/she is able to effectively continue self-study according to his/her needs and does not get lost in the information sometimes mistakenly published under the slogan “permaculture”.
Training will be led in Slovak language. Videos from lectures will be prepared. Videos will be provided with added Hungarian subtitles.

THE COURSE COVERS THE FOLLOWING AREAS
Permaculture – what ethical pillars permaculture is based on, what are the basic principles for working with living systems and how to apply them.
Natural patterns – what is the importance of observing and imitating natural patterns? What can we learn from them and how can they help us in our projects?
Working with the landscape – even in a small garden or on a balcony, it is necessary to be able to read basic information about your surroundings, the context in which we live and to make interventions accordingly.
Working with people – permaculture creates systems in which life thrives, including, of course, human life. How to define your goals, how to work with yourself and your community, how not to burn out?
The most common structures in permaculture design – raised beds, forest garden and edible forest, hedgerows, herb spiral, German kopa, small intensive systems – how and where is it optimal to use them?
Water in the garden and landscape – capturing, storing and using water efficiently – how to do it. And what are the options for wastewater treatment and prevention?
Soil, plants, animals – basic growing practices, how to care for and fertilise the soil. How to organically protect crops against potential pests, and what about animals and their involvement in the system?
Permaculture in everyday life – how can I get closer to sustainability in everyday life?
Practical lesson – demonstration of biochar production, demonstration of no-till cultivation, accelerated design demonstration or demonstration of working with the community. Although the course is “introductory” – a hands-on demonstration is also included.
Guided tour of the Nature Gardens – this will include a guided tour of the Brdarka twin nature gardens.
DURATION
The course consists of 18 lessons and aims not to delve into every topic of permaculture in technical detail. Instead, it seeks to familiarize participants with the broad scope of permaculture, enabling them to continue with self-study effectively according to their needs, without getting lost in the abundance of information—some of which is mistakenly published under the label “permaculture.”
