THANKS TO THE LAND4CLIMATE PROJECT, WE CAN IMPLEMENT NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS DIRECTLY IN THE REGIONS.

Our goal within the LAND4CLIMATE project is to assess climate risks and design effective nature-based solutions (NBS) to help mitigate these risks. Additionally, we focus on developing business models that ensure fair and sustainable land policy strategies for the implementation of nature-based solutions, applicable across various parts of the Košice region. We also aim to support the replication of successful models and the dissemination of best practices, increasing the resilience of our regions to the impacts of climate change and contributing to environmental protection.

We are not alone in addressing similar challenges. Together with project partners from countries such as the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Romania, we share a common goal of increasing climate resilience.

This time, our project partners from Romania hosted us in the city of Timișoara.

A PRACTICAL START

On the very first day, we headed out together for field visits to the sites where our Romanian project partners plan to implement nature-based solutions. At these selected locations, practical discussions and presentations were held about current plans and the next steps and goals they aim to achieve through NBS implementation. This part of the visit gave participants the opportunity to see firsthand the places they had only heard about until now.

MAIN TOPICS OF DISCUSSION

The agenda of the meeting was packed with interesting presentations, workshops, and discussions focusing on various aspects of implementing nature-based solutions (NBS).

One of the key parts of the meeting was the discussion on assessing climate risks and identifying “hotspots” where implemented nature-based solutions could have the most significant impact on the area. We actively participated in workshops, where we had the opportunity to contribute our ideas and share our experiences.

During the workshops, we focused on the results of the climate risk analysis, which provided us with valuable insights into the specific risks we face in our research areas (in our case, the Roňava basin). We identified so-called “hotspots,” where issues such as heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, and floods are most pronounced. These factors have a serious impact on local communities and ecosystems, making it extremely important for us to respond with effective and sustainable solutions.

In groups, we discussed specific approaches to implementing these nature-based solutions (NBS) in these sensitive areas. Together, we brainstormed and exchanged ideas, striving to come up with innovative and practical proposals that could help mitigate climate risks. Each participant contributed their experiences and knowledge, creating a dynamic atmosphere that fostered our mutual collaboration.

Our goal is for the proposed nature-based solutions (NBS) to not only address existing challenges but also to be tailored to the specific conditions of Roňava. We believe that these solutions can enhance the resilience of local ecosystems and contribute to the quality of life for residents.

The LAND4CLIMATE consortium meeting in Romania provided us with numerous valuable insights that will serve as a foundation for the next steps in implementing nature-based solutions. We look forward to transforming our ideas into concrete actions and witnessing their positive impact on our planet.
