As part of the UPSCALE project, we have joined forces with our SLOVAK–HUNGARIAN partners.
We present a unique insight into an inspiring tour of Košice. In the video, you can see the places they visited, what captured their interest, and how these experiences can contribute to our shared efforts towards creating greener urban spaces.
What Did We Visit?
Over the course of two days, together with our partners from the Budapest district of Terézváros, we explored places where nature meets the city and where people are transforming their surroundings for the better.
Some of the inspiring locations we visited included:
-
Mlynský náhon – a restored water stream in the city centre, where civic initiatives are bringing life back to the water.
-
Villa Sándy – a building featuring an herbal garden, green roof, and an interesting history.
-
The pond at U.S. Steel – an example of how even industrial areas can host vibrant natural habitats.
-
KVP Housing Estate – where locals created a pond for protected toads.
-
Ekolor – a company that established a rain garden and pond on its premises.
-
“Poď na dvor” Community Garden – a once unused plot of land transformed into a lively green space full of neighbourly activity.
-
Two secondary schools involved in the project – students presented their ideas on how to redesign their school grounds following permaculture principles.
Together with Experts and Local Initiatives
We were guided through the tour by Robert Gregorek, an expert in garden architecture and botany, who provided fascinating context at each stop.
At the same time, we met several active individuals and communities who showed us that urban change is possible – even if it happens step by step.
What Do We Take Away from This?
The excursion wasn’t just about sightseeing – it was about exchanging experiences, engaging in conversations, and searching for solutions that can be applied in schools and public spaces.
We believe that such examples inspire not only schools but also cities and municipalities to think in a more sustainable way.
About the UPSCALE Project:
The UpScale project brings nature-friendly solutions to urban areas that support increased biodiversity and the restoration of natural ecosystems.
We carry out pilot testing of urban permaculture measures and actively connect all relevant partners and stakeholders. The goal is to promote the integration of permaculture as an effective adaptation tool to mitigate the impacts of climate change in the urban environment.
