THANKS TO THE LAND4CLIMATE PROJECT, ARR OPENED IMPORTANT TOPICS AT THE WORKSHOP

On December 17, 2024, the Agency for support of the Regional Development in Košice (ARR) organized a workshop aimed at bringing together experts, local governments, and regional enthusiasts. The main topic was nature-based solutions (NbS), which offer an effective way to tackle climate threats such as floods, droughts, and erosion.

The inspiring event, held as part of the Land4Climate (L4C) project, was driven by collaboration, experience-sharing, and the search for solutions that are both environmentally friendly and beneficial to local communities.

Examples of Best Practices from the Regions

The workshop brought numerous inspiring stories about how nature-based solutions are already transforming life in various areas of the Košice region:

  • Ťahanovce: Over the past decade, projects focused on water retention have been developed here, including a bioclimatic park and water management systems beneath residential areas. Cooperation with local forestry communities demonstrates that combining municipal initiatives with the private sector yields tangible results.

  • Žehra: A private farm built a retention pond for rainwater storage with minimal costs. This project proved that even small-scale solutions can bring significant change.

  • Botanical Garden in Košice: Spanning 30 hectares, this unique rainwater collection project features a 100 m³ underground reservoir and newly created wetlands that support biodiversity. Financial support from various companies highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in implementing large-scale projects.

  • Mlynský Náhon Project: This project is fully prepared for implementation but is still awaiting funding. It illustrates that even the best plans remain on paper without the necessary financial resources.

Challenges in Implementing Nature-Based Solutions

Participants of the workshop openly discussed the challenges they face when implementing nature-based solutions:

  • Public Engagement: Convincing landowners to participate in projects requires patience and effective communication.
  • Finances: Many projects are limited by a lack of financial resources, especially in smaller municipalities or on private land.
  • Technical Expertise: In some regions, there is a lack of specialized technical support, such as when dealing with issues related to landslides, erosion, drainage, or subsurface drainage systems.
  • Permits: Complex permitting processes can delay or even completely halt the implementation of projects.

The workshop demonstrated that nature-based solutions have the potential to improve the quality of life in our regions while also helping nature adapt to climate change. Participants not only gained practical advice but also left with new motivation to prepare additional projects.
